Lawrie victorious after playoff in Seville

Peter Lawrie''s triumph at the Spanish Open on Sunday means that the last three European Tour events have been won by Irish golfers.

Lawrie beat Ignacio Garrido in a playoff after both had finished 15 under par in Seville, following on from Darren Clarke''s recent win at the Asian Open and Damien McGrane''s China Open success.

Danish golfer Soren Hansen took second place in Spain, finishing one shot off the lead, while Englishman David Lynn and Miguel Angel Jimenez were both 13 under par.

"It''s nice to keep it in the Irish contingent," Lawrie said after claiming the title.

The Irishman hit four birdies in his last six holes and had looked certain to clinch victory without a playoff, but Garrido matched him by finishing with a 30-foot putt to tie the score.

Playing on home soil, Garrido was looking to follow the example of his father Antonio, who won the Spanish Open title in 1972.

Lawrie was born in Dublin and turned professional in 1997. He was named Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 2003.
