McGowan reflects on opening day success

English golfer Ross McGowan has said that he drove the ball well on the important holes during the first round of the Methorios Capital Italian Open yesterday.

The man from Surrey holds a joint lead with Paraguay''s Marco Ruiz having carded an eight-under-par 64 at the Castello di Tolcinasco Golf and Country Club in Milan.

South African Hennie Otto, England''s Mark Foster and Marc Warren of Scotland are all one shot behind and lead the chasing pack.

"On the par fives and the long par fours I seemed to be able to hit the fairways, which was good," said Titleist golfer McGowan. "I played really nicely all through my game to be honest."

He also suggested that the Milanese greens were "fantastic" and were probably some of the best he has played on recently.

American John Daly also made a return to form and currently sits in fifth place, three shots behind the leading pair.
