Elkington happy with Sawgrass start

Experienced Australian golfer Steve Elkington was content with the start he made to the Players Championship yesterday.

The two-times winner of the tournament, who is sponsored by Titleist, hit a round of 69 to keep himself in contention at the top of the leaderboard going into the second day.

Elkington also remarked on the quality of the course, saying it is important players are "even more precise" than usual with their shots.

"The course is in as good as condition as I''ve ever seen it. It''s very dry, and the greens are firm, so, you know, the shots have to be very precise," he commented.

Birdies were made by the Australian on the fourth hole, as well as on four of the five holes between the ninth and the 14th. The birdie at the tenth was the player''s favourite of the day.

Only Jack Nicklaus has won more Players Championship titles than Elkington. The Golden Bear''s three wins put him one ahead of the 45-year-old Aussie, as well as Hal Sutton, Fred Couples and Davis Love III.
