Greg Norman has admitted disappointment at seeing his chances of claiming a third Open title slip away during the final round at Royal Birkdale.
The Great White Shark led the field by two shots going into the last day but struggled to match the heights of the previous rounds, eventually carding a 77 to finish nine over par.
Norman ended up tied for third with Sweden''s Henrik Stenson, but said that he was pleased to show that he can still compete with the world''s top players at the age of 53.
He stated: "I am disappointed, that would be an understatement.
"It was a tough day but I can hold my head up high
I came here with a good attitude and a fresh approach to life and it has shone through in my game."
Norman recently married Chris Evert and the former tennis star was a visible presence at Royal Birkdale as her husband recaptured the form of his earlier years with several superb rounds.
The Australian was Open champion in 1986 and 1993 but recently said that he now spends more time playing tennis than golf.
