Garcia laments "brain dead" final round

Sergio Garcia voiced his frustration at seeing his chances of clinching a first Major victory at Royal Birkdale yesterday dashed by a wretched final round.

The Taylormade golfer went round in 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 51st on 17 over par – his worst performance in 13 appearances at the Open Championship.

Garcia''s miserable last day included consecutive double bogeys at the 13th and 14th holes, with the Spaniard needing 44 shots to complete the back nine and later describing his performance as "brain dead".

"My body just didn''t react to my thoughts," the 28-year-old said.

"I couldn''t think straight from the 11th green onwards after a bogey on ten. I lost my head," he added.

Garcia lost out to Padraig Harrington after a playoff at the 2007 Open at Carnoustie. He won The Players Championship in May but is yet to claim a Major title, having also finished as runner-up at the PGA Championship in 1999.

Bristol player Chris Wood took the silver medal at Royal Birkdale yesterday as the highest-placed amateur in the field. The 20-year-old finished ten over par to tie for fifth with Srixon''s Jim Furyk.
