Open champion backs Monty for Ryder Cup

Wilson golfer Padraig Harrington hopes to play with Yonex''s Colin Montgomerie in the Ryder Cup in September.

The two-time Open winner said yesterday that Montgomerie''s inclusion would help to perfect "the balance in the team" for the competition at Valhalla.

Although the Scot is now ranked number 82 in the world and remains far off the automatic qualifying spots, Harrington believes that European captain Nick Faldo should make Montgomerie one of his wildcard choices.

"I look forward to playing with anyone in the team, but it would certainly be a pick of mine to go for Monty," the Irishman said.

"He is a totally different man when it comes to the Ryder Cup."

Montgomerie has struggled for form this year but his Ryder Cup pedigree remains impressive – he has represented Europe in the competition eight times and never lost a singles match.

Now ranked number three in the world following his Open triumph on Sunday, Harrington also backed Cobra golfer Ian Poulter to make the Ryder Cup side due to his second-place finish at Royal Birkdale.
