Phil Mickelson was in Washington DC yesterday to explain how an understanding of science has helped him to become a successful golfer.
The Callaway player visited the US department of education with wife Amy to testify at a hearing on improving maths and science tuition for American students.
Mickelson demonstrated a keen interest in science and engineering during a talk with local schoolchildren, while Amy revealed that his passion for golf is rivalled by a love of space exploration, USA Today reports.
"Everybody knows Phil as a golfer, but I think there''s an astronaut trapped inside his body," she said.
The world number two stated: "From the aerodynamics on the ball, to the angles on the club head and the statistics I use to decide what training to do, there is a lot of math and science in golf."
Mickelson, a three-time Major winner, finished tied for 19th at The Open last week on 14 over par.
