Mercedes-Benz Champs course 'in great shape'

The venue for this week''s Mercedes-Benz Championship is in perfect condition for the opening event of the 2009 PGA Tour season, it has been claimed.

Scott Caroll, PGA head professional at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, told pga.com that the course is "looking great" ahead of the first round tomorrow (January 8th).

He said that heavy rainfall last week has left the grass looking "quite healthy" and means that the course is in "spectacular condition" for the eagerly anticipated tournament, which is only open to players who won a title on the Tour last year.

"The trade winds came through and have dried the course nicely, so we are definitely ready to offer a great test," Mr Caroll said.

"Hit it straight, you have some good chances to score. Miss the fairway, it''s going to be a real challenge."

Players in the 33-man field for the Mercedes-Benz Championship include defending champion Daniel Chopra, 2008 Masters winner Trevor Immelman and American crowd favourite Boo Weekley.
