David Howell had a great amateur career; he won the British Boys Championship in 1993 and represented GB & Ireland the victorious side in the 1995 Walker Cup before turning professional the same year. He won his first tour event in 1998 – the Australian PGA Championship - and followed it up the following year with another victory in the Dubai Desert Classic. Although he put in some strong finishes – which took him into 10th spot on the European Order of Merit in 2004, it was not until 2005 that he bagged another victory – this time the BMW International Open. In the same year he also won the HSBC Champions Tournament when he out-scored playing partner Tiger Woods. The performance prompted Woods to nickname his rival ‘Cool Dude’. In 2006, he won the BMW Championship and became the first English winner of the Championship since Nick Faldo in 1989, which took him into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. He led the European Order of Merit for much of the 2006 season, eventually finishing 3rd after back problems led to a drop in form. David Howell was a member of the winning European Ryder Cup team in 2004 - and also in 2006 at the K Club in Ireland where he won a superb 2.5 points out of a possible 3 with two wins and a tie, beating American Brett Wetterich 5 & 4 in the Sunday singles. Coached for many years by Pete Cowen but reverted to his original coach, Clive Tucker, in 2002. 2008 was an up and down season for David. The highlight was a second place finish at the Portuguese Open. Further top-10 finishes followed at the Johnnies Walker Championship (tied 3rd) and the Qatar Masters (tied 7th). However despite these great results, David threw in missed cuts that are uncharacteristic of his consistent playing style. He finished the season in 45th place on the European Tour Order of Merit.

2007	Barclays Scottish Open

12-15 July - The Barclays Scottish Open - Loch Lomond.

As the curtain raiser to the Open Championship the following week at Carnoustie, the Barclays Scottish Open attracted some of the biggest names in the world – Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Luke Donald and others all made the trip. It wasn’t, however, one of the big names who walked away with the £50,000 first prize – but a virtually unknown Frenchman - Gregory Havret - who holed a tricky 5-footer on the first extra hole to beat world no 3 Phil Mickelson in a play-off. The title also earned Havret the last remaining spot at the Open.
