Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

Residence: Madrid, Spain
DOB: 13/10/1980
Gonzalo is without question one of the rising golf superstars in Europe. An accomplished tennis player, he started playing golf under the tutelage of his father at the age of five. He is now coached by Jose Carlos Gutiérrez. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano turned professional in 2004 having finished 8th at the European Tour Qualifying School. Amazingly, in 2005 he won the KLM Open – in only his 16th start (it took Seve Ballesteros 27 attempts before he won) and was duly named Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. Success continued in 2006 when he won the BMW Asian Open, beating Henrik Stenson in a play-off (following which be promptly proposed to his girlfriend), and Happily married, he returned to winning ways in May 2007 he won again – this time the Telecom Italia Open. A week after his victory in Italy, his company – GFC Golf and Business – along with Miguel Angel Jiménez’s company – Golf Acción – began their promotion of the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia at Aloha Golf Club. Gonzalo captured the fourth Tour title of his career at the third extra hole of a thrilling sudden-death play-off with Lee Westwood at the Quinn Insurance British Masters at The Belfry in 2008. Earlier in the season he secured top-10 finished in both the Portuguese and Welsh Open’s. His final position of 34th on the European Tour Order of Merit was the best finish of his career, beating his previous best of 40th in 2006.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth.

The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
