Francesco Molinari

Residence: Turin, Italy
DOB: 11/08/1982
One of two famous Italian golfing brothers, Francesco Molinari turned professional in 2004 and earned full status on the PGA European Tour the following year. He is the younger brother of Eduardo who just nine months before Francesco’s maiden win became the first European since 1911 to win the US Amateur Championship (2005) so these two siblings are clearly worth keeping an eye on. Francesco learned his game Circolo Golf Torino Club where he still plays. Enjoys snowboarding – and is a big Inter Milan supporter. In 2006, he claimed his maiden Tour Victory – the Telecom Italia Open – which helped him finish 38th on the Order of Merit with prize money of over 650,000 Euros. He also became the first Italian since Massimo Mannelli in 1980 to win the tournament. Put up a brave defence of the title in finishing joint third in 2007 after a final round of 65. That was one of six top-10’s in the season, his most since joining the Tour in 2005. Francesco continued the good form that he had during the 2007 season in 2008. After missing consecutive cuts at the Dubai Desert Classic and Johnnie Walker Classic the young Italian stormed back with a 5th place finish at the Maybank Malaysian Classic. His next top-10 came at the BMW Asian Open where final rounds of 68 and 69 gave him a 3rd place finish. The highlight of his season however came at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. A final round 70 was not quite enough to stop eventual winner Robert Karlsson claiming a 2 stroke victory.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth.

The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
