Robert Allenby has been one of Australia’s finest golfers with 8 PGA Tour of Australasia victories to his name, four on the US Tour (The Shell Houston Open and Advil Western Open in 2000, and in 2001 the Nissan Open and Pennsylvania Classic.). On the European Tour he had a stunning year in 1996 winning the English Open, French Open and the British Masters. He has twice led the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit (1992 and 1994) and been a member of four Presidents Cup teams. In 1989 he won the Australian Juniors Amateur Championship and turned professional in 1991. He now plays primarily on the US Tour where, in 2006, he finished in the top 65 on the money list for the seventh consecutive season, missing just two cuts in 22 starts. Not a man you want to be in a play-off against, Allenby’s tally in that regard is played 9, won 9. |

From the Ryder Cup matches at the K Club in Ireland, many of the world’s best players headed across the Irish Sea to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the UK leg of the World Golf Championships. With an incredible 23 under par total, Tiger Woods demolished the field to take an astonishing 12th win out of 22 WGC events. Tiger left runners-up Ian Poulter and Adam Scott a very distant eight shots behind. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big. On this occasion, Tiger walked away (or rather flew away in his private jet) with over 1 million euros. Hardly worth turning up was it?! |
