Robert Karlsson

Residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco
DOB: 09/03/1969
Robert Karlsson is probably the best golfer to come out of Sweden. He was born in Katrineholm, Sweden and was introduced to the game by his father who was a green keeper. After a successful amateur career he turned professional in 1989 and qualified for membership of the European Tour at the 1990 Qualifying School. Robert has won 9 events on the European Tour and has seven European Tour wins to his name – including the BMW International (1997), Belgacom Open (1999), Spanish Open (2001) and Omega European Masters (2002). His best year prior to 2008 was the 2006 season when he won the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor and the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe. These wins helped him to finish the year 4th in the European Order of Merit - and also secured him a place alongside fellow Swede Henrik Stenson in Woosie’s Ryder Cup team at the K Club. At the 2006 Celtic Manor Wales Open, Karlsson broke the European Tour's 36 hole and 54 hole scoring records by shooting 124 for the first two rounds and 189 for the first 3. However as the course was a par 69, which is rare at the top level, his ‘to-par’ scores were a much less remarkable 14 under after two rounds and 18 under after three. Karlsson is one of the tallest golfers on the European Tour at 6ft 5in. Like many leading Swedish golfers he lives outside his home country, basing himself in the tax haven of Monaco. Robert ensured his place in the annals of European Tour history when he became the first Swedish player to win The Order of Merit in 2008. The 39 year old entered the season-ending Volvo Masters with a commanding lead thanks to a supremely consistent season which saw him win the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as well as notch ten other top ten finishes including the Masters Tournament, the US Open Championship and The Open Championship.

 2008  Irish Open

15-18 May - Irish Open - Adare Manor

Played at the magnificent Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort the championship was memorable not only because Richard Finch's victory, but by his falling into the River Maigue after hitting his third shot on th 18th. His second shot ended up on the fringe of the riverbank but he still decided to go for the green. The mighty swipe he gave it knocked him off balance, and into the drink he went, much to the amusement of the surrounding specators. His caddie hauled him from the water and, dripping wet, he made his way to the green and took three putts which was enough to bank the 416,000 Euro first prize.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth.

The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
