Canadian left-hander Mike Weir is best known for his victory at the 2003 Masters at Augusta National making history as the first Canadian to win a Major. He was also, incidentally, only the second left-hander to win a Major - the other being Bob Charles in 1962 who beat Phil Rodgers to win the famous claret jug at the Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes (Phil Mickelson, of course, has now made it a trio). Weir is a right-hander who plays golf left-handed; a trait he shares with fellow PGA Tour pro Phil Mickelson and Golfbidder’s resident ‘lefty’ Thomas Tanner.
Aged 13 Mike sought advice from Jack Nicklaus. In a letter, asked whether he should switch to playing right-handed? Jack’s response was to stick to his natural swing. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University (majoring in Recreation Management), and won the Ontario Amateur Championship in 1990 and 1992. He was an All-American at BYU in 1992 and turned professional in 1992, and started on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour.
Weir’s first PGA Tour win came at the 1999 Air Canada Championship in British Columbia made him the first Canadian to win a PGA Tour event in Canada in 45 years. He went on to win 2 more times in 2003 – at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and in Nissan Open – victories which took him to No 3 in the Official World Rankings, a career high ranking. For his outstanding play in 2003, Weir won the Lou Marsh Trophy for outstanding Canadian athlete of the year.
Our biog photo of Mike Weir was taken at the World Golf Championships at Doral in March 2007 where he picked up a paltry $45,000 for coming tied 50th. Hardly worth turning up, was it?
Away from the golf course, Creekside Estate Winery, near Lincoln, Ontario, began producing wine for Weir in 2005, and as of 2007 had released a merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet-merlot, cabernet-shiraz and Icewine under the Wier brand. His Icewine Vidal was named by Travel and Leisure Golf magazine as one of its top five golf-related wines. Weir has announced plans to open his own winery in the summer of 2008.
Mike best result in 2008 came at the Deutsche Bank Championship where he finished alone in second place. He could not consolidate a first round 61 and go on to win. 7 further top-10 finishes in 2008 elevated mike to #21 in the World Rankings and 14th on the PGA Tour money list with over $3million in prize money in 2008. |
