Ariel Canete

Residence: Santa Teresita, Argentina
DOB: 07/02/1975
Launched 2007 in some style by becoming the first Argentine to win in South Africa by claiming the Joburg Open and earning himself an exemption until the end of the 2009 season. It was the first of four victories in a glorious year for Argentine golf, preceding successes by Daniel Vancsik, Angel Cabrera and Andres Romero. Finished 143rd on The European Tour Order of Merit in 2006 and then having failed to regain his full playing privileges at the Qualifying School – Final Stage in San Roque in November, he started the new season with two appearances on the Challenge Tour before the Joburg Open. Opportunity knocked and the Argentine answered the call in commanding fashion. After promising improvement in 2007 where he finished 70th on the European Tour Order of Merit in 2008 the Argentine took a step back in 2008. His only top-10 came at the tournament at which he triumphed in 2007 when he finished in a tie for 9th at the Joburg Open. He finished the season in 129th place on the order of merit.

 2007  BMW PGA Championship

24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth.

The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002.
