Oliver Fisher

Residence: Chigwell, England
DOB: 13/09/1988
Oliver Fisher is a young but hugely talented player who many believe is destined for greatness. Certainly Nike think so – he has already signed a major contract with them and Nike tend not to pick losers. He is coached by Chris Jenkins, the professional at Crowlands Heath Golf Club in Essex. Our biog photo of Oliver was taken during the 2007 Celtic Manor Wales Open in June 2007. Fisher is a product of the Nick Faldo Series – a competition for young amateur golfers – which he won in 2004 and 2005. He made history by becoming the youngest golfer ever to play in the Walker Cup at the age of just 16 – and also became the youngest Briton to earn his right to play on the European Tour. Other notable amateur achievements include winning the St Andrews Links Trophy aged 18; he has also played for England in the Eisenhower Trophy where he finished 5th overall in the individual standings, and was runner up in the English Amateur Championship and the prestigious Brabazon Trophy in 2005. A solid rookie season saw him finish 109th on the Order of Merit before he making huge progress in 2008 by contending regularly on Tour and missing out on a maiden Tour victory by the thinnest of margins after losing a sudden-death play-off to Frenchman Thomas Level at the MAPFRE Open de Andalucia by Valle Romano. Other top-10’s of the 2008 season came at the SAS Masters, French Open and New Zealand Open. The result of this fantastic season was a 51st place finish on the European Tour Order of Merit.

 2007  Celtic Manor Wales Open

31 May - 3 June - The Welsh Open - Celtic Manor.

Played between 31st May and 3rd June 2007, the 2007 Wales Open took place at Celtic Manor – venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup – and was won by South Africa’s Richard Sterne who holed a five footer on the 18th to take the £250,000 winner’s cheque – and dash Welsh hopes by edging out the big home favourite Bradley Dredge. Dredge was the joint overnight leader, but having run up an amazing five birdies in a row from the ninth, his drive on 18 clipped a fairway bunker from where he had to chip out short. A superb pitch left him with a six-footer to go into the play-off, but tantalisingly, it caught the lip and just stayed above ground.
