Paul Broadhurst

Residence: Warwickshire, England
DOB: 14/08/1965
Paul sums his career up as a “rollercoaster” when he looked back on six victories and a Ryder Cup appearance. His amateur career was financed by him working as a van driver and in fibre glass factory – before promptly going on to win a tournament in each of his first three years as a tour professional. He credits his father, who was a 10-handicapper before losing an arm in an explosion, for his interest in golf. His first victory was in the Cannes Open in 1989 – and he went on to win the European Pro Celebrity in 1991 and the B&H in 1993. This was followed by miserable 10 years without a win – partly as a result of an injured wrist sustained at the 2000 Dubai Classic. He eventually bounced back, however, to win the Estoril Open de Portugal in 2005, and successfully defended the title in 2006 – when he finished 19th on the European Tour Order of Merit – frustratingly missing out on a Ryder Cup spot at the K Club by just one spot. While he says his victories were his greatest achievements, the highlight of his career was the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island where he was unbeaten thanks to a four ball win with Ian Woosnam over Paul Azinger and Hale Irwin and a singles victory over Mark O’Meara. He loves all sport, music – and is a big Leeds United fan. Paul played his 500th European Tour event at the 2008 BMW PGA Championship, a fitting milestone for a stalwart of the Tour for the past two decades. The highlight of the season however came at the SAS Masters. An opening round of 67 paved the way for his only top-10 finish of the season - a tie for 4th.

2006  American Express - World Golf Championships

28 September-1 October - American Express WGC - The Grove.

From the Ryder Cup matches at the K Club in Ireland, many of the world’s best players headed across the Irish Sea to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the UK leg of the World Golf Championships. With an incredible 23 under par total, Tiger Woods demolished the field to take an astonishing 12th win out of 22 WGC events. Tiger left runners-up Ian Poulter and Adam Scott a very distant eight shots behind. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big. On this occasion, Tiger walked away (or rather flew away in his private jet) with over 1 million euros. Hardly worth turning up was it?!

In Paul Broadhurst's bag...
Interesting to see Paul still using the TaylorMade 300 Series forged irons - which are now several years old. We think the headcovers hid an R7 Quad driver and TaylorMade r7 TP fairway wood. A Hogan Forged wedge at the front - and lurking at the back can be seen a Mizuno Fli-Hi hybrid. Good to see even the best golfers in the world needing some help with their long irons. And tucked on the right, that looks like an Odyssey DFX 2-Ball Blade.
