Brett Wetterich

Residence: Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
DOB: 08/09/1973
The big-hitting but surprisingly accurate Brett Wetterich was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and started playing golf when he was two. He attended Oak Hills High School. He turned professional in 1994. A 12-year professional, Wetterich spent most of the first 11 years of his career struggling for consistency. He was a PGA Tour rookie in 2000, but injury truncated his season and he spent the next few seasons playing mainly on the Nationwide Tour, where he had wins in 2003 and 2004. Having just scraped through qualifying school at the end of the 2005 season, he enjoyed a superb 2006. A first win came at the Byron Nelson in May, beating Trevor Immelman by one stroke. In an emotional acceptance speech, he dedicated the victory to his brother Mark who was killed by a drunk driver in 2003; His brother’s initials – MTW – are stamped in bold on his bag. The win at the Byron Nelson helped him finish 10th on the US money list – and secure a debut place in the 2006 US Ryder Cup team at the K Club in Ireland. Wetterich, who was ranked 294th at the start of the season, had never played in a matchplay event before has appearance in the Ryder Cup. Arguably an experience he might choose to forget as he lost 3&2 to Olazabal and Garcia in the Friday four balls – and then 5&4 to David Howell in the singles. He then finished second three weeks later at the Memorial. He also had a great start to 2007. By April, he had already won well over $1m in prize money, finishing runner-up at the World Golf Championships at Doral (where our biog photo was taken), 8th in the Honda Classic and 10th at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship which he won in 2006. Brett made the cut in seven of 11 PGA Tour events he started in 2008 but was hampered with injuries. Forced to withdraw from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship because of a shoulder injury and then injured his wrist while preparing for the US Open at Torrey Pines. His last start came in the Memorial Tournament in early June. He will play on a Major Medical Extension in 2009 where he will have 17 events to earn $731,077 and earn the Major Medical Extension status for the remainder of the season.

2007  World Golf Championships - CA – Doral

22-25 March - WGC - CA Championship - Doral Golf Resort and Spa - Blue Monster Course.

Tiger Woods bagged another $1.35m for his two-shot win over Ryder Cup team mate Brett Wetterich at the Blue Monster Course at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida between 22nd-25th March 2007. No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row.
