Thomas Bjorn

Residence: Skilkeborg, Denmark
DOB: 18/02/1971
With nine European Tour titles to his name, Thomas Bjorn is one of the best golfers in Europe. In his first season on tour – 1996 – he finished 10th in the Order of Merit – and has finished in the top ten five times. As well as golf, Thomas loves football – and is apparently a big Liverpool fan. Thomas played on the Challenge Tour in his early professional career and won four titles on his way to topping the Rankings in 1995 before emerging as a genuinely top class player by capturing the Loch Lomond World Invitational in 1996. Other Tour victories include the 2006 Irish Open, 2005 Dunlop Masters, 2002 BMW and 2001 Dubai Classic. Bjorn has come close to winning a Major Championship on several occasions – at the 2000 Open Championship at St Andrews he was runner up with Ernie Els to Tiger Woods, in 2003 at Royal St Georges he let slip a 4 shot lead to allow Ben Curtis in – and at the USPGA at Balustrol in New Jersey in 2005 he was runner-up to Phil Mickelson. Bjorn was the first Danish golfer to play in the Ryder Cup (1997 at Valderrama) – and a key contributor both there and at the Belfry in 2002. However he famously fell out with our good friend and team captain Ian Woosnam over his exclusion from the 2006 Ryder Cup Team – but they kissed and made up shortly afterwards – so no hard feelings Thomas! After 11 years inside the top-21 on the European Tour rankings, things slipped away in 2007 when Thomas finished in 44th. Things got even worse in 2008. The highlight of the season was a tie for 6th and 5th in 3 weeks as the Indian Masters and Ballentine’s Championship respectively. Thomas made only 6 cuts in the last 2 thirds of the season and fell to 101st place on the Order of Merit.

2006  American Express - World Golf Championships

28 September-1 October - American Express WGC - The Grove.

From the Ryder Cup matches at the K Club in Ireland, many of the world’s best players headed across the Irish Sea to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the UK leg of the World Golf Championships. With an incredible 23 under par total, Tiger Woods demolished the field to take an astonishing 12th win out of 22 WGC events. Tiger left runners-up Ian Poulter and Adam Scott a very distant eight shots behind. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big. On this occasion, Tiger walked away (or rather flew away in his private jet) with over 1 million euros. Hardly worth turning up was it?!
