John (J.B.) Holmes attended the University of Kentucky and represented the US in the 2005 Walker Cup before turning professional the same year having won the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. J.B. for 10th in his first PGA Tour start at the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii and in February won the FBR Open, making him the fastest golfer to reach $1m in career earnings on the PGA Tour.
JB is known for hitting the ball long distances (at 310 yards he is ranked 3rd in overall driving distance on the PGA Tour) however with only 52.4% accuracy (195th on Tour), below the Tour average for greens in regulation and sitting in 32nd on the money list, length may not always be the answer. J.B. Plays courses by routinely hitting his driver as far as he can, bringing back memories of John Daly's "Grip it and Rip It" philosophy. This tends to leave him with only a wedge or short iron to the green - preferring a short iron from an array of lies than a longer iron from the fairway.
2008 was a good year for J.B. In February he secured his second PGA Tour victory at the FBR Open. This was a little more hard fought than when he won it in 2006 by a seven stroke margin. This time he had to beat world #2 Phil Mickelson in a play-off. He did so with a birdie at the first extra hole. |
