Our biography photo of ‘CH3’ was taken in March 2007 and shows him using a 9.5 degree Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-5 at the World Golf Championships at Doral in Florida where he finished 16th.
Billed as one of the USA’s top golfing hopes Charles Howell III grew up near Augusta National, home of the Masters, and was a member of Augusta Country Club which is adjacent to the dreaded Amen Corner. He was introduced to the game of golf by his next door neighbour and was soon breaking 70 in competition. At aged 10 he began taking lessons with top coach with David Ledbetter and participated in his first PGA Tour event at the age of 17.
Before turning professional he read Business Management at Oklahoma State University and in 2000, he was a member of the winning team and also the individual winner at the NCAA Division I Golf Championships with a record-setting 23-under-par performance. This feat saw him win the Haskins Award which is given to the most outstanding collegiate golfer of the year.
Howell’s PGA Tour career could not have started any better placing in the top-10 in 2 of his first 4 events of his rookie season. In July of this year he lost at the first hole of a play-off to Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama at the Greater Milwaukee Open. Over all in this season he earned $1,520,632 and recorded 5 top-10 finishes and was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award.
Howell won his first PGA Tour tournament at the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in October 2002. Four weeks later he finished in second at The Tour Championship and finished in the top-10 of the Money List for the first time.
Howell bounced back from his disappointing 2006 season with a successful 2007 campaign. He recorded 2 runner-up finishes in his first 3 tournaments, the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Buick Invitational. He won his second PGA Tour event in 2007 by beating Phil Mickelson on the 3rd extra hole at the Nissan Open in February.
His best finish of 2008 came at the Turning Stone Resort Championship where a final round 78 put pay to a challenge for his first tour win of the year. Without a win in almost 2 year Charles has slipped to #100 in the Official World Golf Rankings but has still amassed over $16,000,000 in career prize money. |

In beating Jose Coceres, Boo Weekley and Camilo Villegas, Mark Wilson finally secured his first PGA Tour victory after 111 starts, picking up a cool $990,000 for his efforts. Wilson had ended every year for the past 10 back at the PGA Tour’s qualifying School, but this win gives him Exemption through to 2010. |

| | In Charles Howell III's bag... | In Charles's bag at the Honda Classic - where he finished 16th - are his Callaway X-Forged irons - and his Callaway X-Tour wedges with a vintage finish. Although the main headcover denotes an FT-i (that's Callaway's new square driver), according to CH3's own website, he uses a Big Bertha FT-5 9.5 degree, Callaway X Fairway 15 degree, and the new Odyssey Black Series putter.
