After 4 years without hitting a single ball, I started playing again a few days ago. It soon became obvious that my 28-year old Hogan Apex 2 blades were suffering from extreme fatigue (though it may well have been me suffering!), so after checking things out on Golfbidder I plumped for the X-14 Pro's as a stopgap until funds allowed a set of X-Prototypes.....however, after 2 hours on the range, and 18 holes yesterday, I don't think that the X-14 Pro's will be leaving my bag for some time! They have an incredibly soft feel for a cast club, and the Rifle shafts give a more penetrating ball flight than I was expecting from a cavity-back, which is perfect....the standard shot for me is a soft draw, though it's just as easy to hit a fade too.....also, the spin generated from the short irons is fantastic!! These irons have become a minor classic over the years, now I can easily see why, and I'm sure that any standard of golfer would be extremely happy with the X-14 Pro's, especially with Golfbidder's great service!

The performance and look of these clubs are top draw. Having tested X18 and X20 and tour versions in no doubt have the better clubs. A Callaway classic!!!

Absolutely agree with Dave in the above review. The heads are very forgiving and will contribute to a lazy strike. I found that when I tried to hit a Mizuno bladed 7-iron, I couldn't hit the the thing! They are good irons, very solid and the typical Callaway top line inspires confidence. They have minimal off-set which is great for shaping shots (or attempting to anyway!) My final mis-giving is that they have a wide sole which makes it hard to hit delicate knock-downs, they only seem to want to hit full shots. My last handicap of 18 was 5 years ago, I've since joined a club again and will look to buy something which is more playable like a set of Titleists. The X-14's are in my opinion, a typical Callaway product. Great as a game improver iron, not so great for those looking for more workability and control. Final note, the shaft is an absolutely key component, the regular rifle shaft is plenty strong, so it is vital that you get the shaft right, it is often regarded as the engine of the club. The difference between a correct shaft and incorrect one could be as much as 25-30 yards. Accuracy of course is effected too. Too stiff and you'll hit low and left, too weak and you will be all over the place. Always seek professional advice before taking advantage of Golfbidder!!!

Owned a set of X14 Pro series for 1 year. Great club. Looks good at address, not as large a topline as what you would might expect from callaway. I experienced a nice low penetrating ball flight. Great forgiveness. On the downside I found that they lack any sort of feel especially with the 8-Wedge. I also found that the forgiveness was making me lazy. This was ok at the start but I found that over time my swing was in trouble.

Just Started Playing Last Summer (2004). Bought A Full Set Of Slazenger Firesteels (Including Bag,Trolley,Woods,Putter Etc.)From A Well Known National Retailer To Get Me Going. Enjoyed The Game (In Fact Became Hooked). Problem With Aforementioned Clubs Was I Had To Aim A Bit To My Right To Achieve Target. Now Was The Time To Upgrade I Thought. My Mate Had Callaway Big Bertha Woods (Driver 3&5)And Let Me Use Them For A Couple Of Rounds. So Impressed With The Difference As Opposed To Slazengers Went Out And Bought Same. My Thought Was If The Woods Were That Good Surely Callaway Irons Would Be Beneficial To My Game. Bought A Set Of Callaway X-14 Pros With Stiff Steel Rifle Constant Weight Shafts And Was Certainly Not Disappointed. I Had Read And Heard That Stiff Shafts Are More Suited To Someone With Fast Swing Speed And That Regular Shafts Were More Suitable To The Likes Of Myself (Not Exactly Lightning Speed). My Point Is That I Could Use These Irons At A Relatively Slow Swing Speed And The Ball Still Goes Like S**t Off A Shovel And Dead Straight. Never Tried Regular Shafts (More Forgiving Blah! Blah! Blah!). All I Can Say Is That If You Are Looking At Buying These Irons I Wouldn't Deliberate Too Much Over Whether You Should Go For Firm,Stiff Or Regular. These Are Great Irons (They Seem To Inspire Confidence As You Address The Ball Looking Down The Shaft). Nine Times Out Of Ten (Good Going Considering How Long I've Been Playing) When I Strike The Ball (I Use Callaway HX-Reds & Red CB1's)There Is A Satisfying Sound That You Know On Impact That You've Succeeded In Your Aim. I Now Go Out On The Course Brimming With Confidence And Know That Soon With The Benefit Of These Irons (Plus The Callaway Woods) I Will Lower My Handicap Even Further.

Model Info 2003

Callaway Steelhead X-14 Pro Series. Following the Big Bertha X-12s, came Callaway's Steelhead X-14s. These were the first iron to feature Callaway's Variable Face Thickness (VFT) Technology. VFT Technology allows Callaway's designers to adjust the thickness and raise or lower the centre of gravity for optimum trajectory with each iron in the set, giving a higher launch angle in the long irons and better control and increased backspin in the short irons and wedges for precise approach shots. Callaway Steelhead X-14s were the quickest selling irons in the history of golf - and they are still very popular. This Pro Series set features less offset than the standard model - allowing better golfers to work the ball more easily.
